Buck O’Neil remembered for his dignity and love (AP)
Buck O’Neil, the former player-manager who became a beloved spokesman for the Negro Leagues, was remembered Saturday for his capacity “to love even in the face of hatred.” “Buck O’Neil always had a smile for you,” said the Rev. Spencer Francis Barrett, pastor of the Bethel A.M.E. church that O’Neil faithfully attended since 1947.

Reds complete trade with Blue Jays (AP)
The Reds sent infielder Trevor Lawhorn to the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday, completing their August trade for left-hander Scott Schoeneweis. Lawhorn hit .224 with four homers and 28 RBIs in 91 games for Cincinnati’s Gulf Coast League team in Sarasota, Fla. He was a ninth-round pick in the June 2004 amateur draft.

Former Red Sox player Pellagrini dies (AP)
Eddie Pellagrini, a major league infielder for eight years before coaching baseball at Boston College for more than 30 seasons, died on Wednesday, according to a spokesman for the Boston Red Sox. He was 88. Pellagrini began his major league career with the Red Sox in 1946 when they won the AL pennant.
