While the Reds’ starting rotation is populated by only two for-certains, right-handers Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo, general manager Wayne Krivsky is trying everything to build a rotation, even an unorthodox move.
Left-hander Jeremy Affeldt, who has started only nine games in the last three years—all nine with the 2006 Royals—signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Reds with plans to be in the starting rotation.
Affeldt was a free agent and said at least one team offered him the closer’s role, but when the Reds saw Affeldt was still available, special assistant Gene Bennett and director of professional scouting “J” Harrison suggested that Krivsky approach Affeldt about starting.
